For example, rather than relying on a user remembering a password (which could be learnt by someone else and easily forgotten) the user now enters a username and simple PIN and then enters the unique code of numbers that appears on the token's LCD screen.

The code could only be generated by that individual token, could only be generated at that time, and when entered once can not be entered again.
